ASUSTek X750LB Linux Pop!_Os 21.10 (NVIDIA) Hardware Review

I have 3 problems:

1. USB M-Audio Fast Track C400
The first time I connect the audio interface everything works fine, but after I turn off or restart the laptop I can see the M-Audio
device but there is no sound.

2. Power Off
I have to shoot down the laptop manually on the power button otherwise I can`t turn it off.

3. Resolution on second external monitor and full screen is never full screen when i play movie on VLC player.
Especially when audio interface is connected.

Sony SVE1713S1RW 2012 - laptop with Fedora 35

PROBE ID

This is a laptop of my wife. It's of good build quality, have large 17-inch display, always-on Radeon graphics and looks very pretty. The keyboard is old-school and responsive. I've upgraded the drive from HTS547575A9E384 to Samsung 850 EVO, replaced Wi-Fi card from Atheros AR9485 to Intel 7260 AC and added 4GB more RAM.

It's impossible to install Linux distros in double-boot with Windows - the grub is destroyed after next reboot. It's only possible to replace Windows by Linux on this laptop.

Lenovo G570 2011 - laptop with Fedora 35

PROBE ID

Good laptop with metal keyboard surface and good overall build quality, but low-resolution display. The display has a HD resolution. The laptop is powerful enough to run any modern operating system. I've upgraded hard drive from WDC WD5000BPVT-24HXZT3 to GIGABYTE GP-GSTFS31120GNTD SSD and added 4GB more RAM.

The wireless whitelist in BIOS doesn't allow me to replace the Wi-Fi card to a better one. It's BCM4313 requiring a lot of work to configure it in Linux. You need to update kernel and install broadcom-wl driver using low-speed Internet connection provided by a free default bcma driver. The graphics is switchable hybrid Intel+Radeon. You can disable Radeon card in BIOS.

ASUSTek X71SL 2008 - laptop with Antix 21 i686

PROBE ID

This is my second laptop from 2009 with large 17.1-inch 16:10 screen. I've upgraded ST9320320AS HDD drive to OCZ AGILITY3 SSD, replaced the P7350 CPU by P8600 and added 1GB more RAM (4GB max for this board). The storage controller is SATA2 and the sequential read/write speed of the drive is limited by 60 MB/sec. Second drive slot seems not working at all - some driver problem on Linux. There is also a slot for SIM card on the board, but full-size PCI-E WLAN card installed instead of WWAN.

The laptop is powerful enough to run modern Linux distros, but unfortunately not supported by recent Linux kernels. I've tried a lot of modern Linux distributions (Fedora, Ubuntu, Lite, etc.) - none of them work. Seems that there is some nouveau driver problem, but I'm not sure. Only recent Antix 21 i686 with kernel 4.9.0 successfully installed on it. Only 3GB of RAM is recognized by the system, but the system itself takes only 200MB of memory, so there is a lot of free memory remaining for apps.

ASUS A3500L 2004 - laptop with Antix 21 i686

PROBE ID

This is my oldest laptop with large 15-inch 4:3 screen. It doesn't support x64 and too slow, so I chose latest Antix 21 i686 for it. Installed via CDROM - it doesn't support boot from USB. Upgraded CPU from Celeron to Pentium, replaced drive from HTS424040M9AT00 4200RPM to HTS721060G9AT00 7200RPM, added Wi-Fi mini PCI Atheros AR2413 card and added 1GB more RAM (2GB max for this board).

Lenovo ThinkPad T490s 2020 - notebook with Fedora 35

PROBE ID

Great lightweight and thin but powerful notebook. All devices work on Fedora 35 except the fingerprint reader as usual. All functional keys work properly. I use this notebook for home office.

Internal Wi-Fi card allows to receive and share Internet or VPN to other devices in the apartment. Wi-Fi and CPU are soldered on the board and not upgradeable. WWAN works properly with SIM card from my smartphone. Connected the Bluetooth mouse without a problem.

Dell Latitude E6530 2014 - laptop with Fedora 35

PROBE ID

Superior quality high-customizable laptop with lot of uncommon business features: secure card, fingerprint sensor, express card, E-sata and point stick outside and 2 WLANs + WWAN inside. The graphics is switchable Intel+NVIDIA. One can disable Intel graphics card in BIOS to use NVIDIA only.

Installed additional SDD to module bay instead of CDROM, replaced primary drive from original Samsung SM841 to newer Samsung 850 EVO, replaced original Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 by Intel 7260 AC, connected large second battery instead of the docking station (200Wh total), added Ericsson F5321 WWAN + GPS card, added 8GB more RAM (16GB max for this board) and added one more Wi-Fi card to second WLAN slot.

The first high-speed Intel 7260 AC Wi-Fi card is used to receive fast Internet. Second Intel Centrino Wireless-N Wi-Fi card is used to receive corporate VPN from the router.

Internal BCM5880 fingerprint sensor and chipcard are not supported by the Linux kernel. GPS card works and receives coordinates properly, but almost never used - there are no useful Linux apps for this. All functional keys work properly including the screen and keyboard backlight.
