Host: Dell Latitude 5511 2020 - laptop with Fedora 35 (exported from Linux-Hardware.org)
PROBE ID
I finally upgraded my personal work computer 7 years after the last upgrade. The choice fell on the Dell Latitude 5511 - this is the last Dell model with a pointstick and an additional row of buttons on the touchpad. Next time, apparently, I will be forced to take a ThinkPad. History repeats itself - I again found last year's corporate item in my region with a 50% discount and ordered it immediately.
This laptop is 45% faster than my previous laptop Dell E6530 with i7-3630QM and with 300% faster SSD drive. It is possible to increase the memory up to 64GB, connect an additional SATA SSD drive, replace the Wi-Fi module and add an LTE module. Unfortunately, it has only one WLAN slot, so I will have to plug in a USB adapter for an additional wireless interface to connect to several networks simultaneously.
The laptop is very energy efficient and uses almost no cooler for daily tasks and is absolutely silent. However, in performance modes, it emits a squeaky sound of piezoelectricity under any load (for example, when touching the touchpad). This sound is not heard during the day, when there are a lot of extraneous noises around, but at night in absolute silence it can be annoying. In comparison, this sound does not penetrate the top surface of my office ThinkPad T490s. To get rid of this sound, I set the battery saving mode in the GNOME settings - in this mode, the processor performance drops by 4 times (corresponding to the maximum power of the 3rd gen i3 processor), but it is still enough for most tasks.
QuoteIn certain situations, an intermittent, high-frequency buzzing noise may be heard from your system. It appears to change with processor activity and can increase in frequency if USB devices are attached. This buzzing noise is apparent to some degree on all laptops but is perceived as abnormal because it is different from the other more familiar noises the computer makes.
The noise has been isolated to the processor's power circuit and is only audible when the processor is in C3 (clock-stopped) power state. In this state, the computer is in a low-power mode designed to reduce chassis heat and extend the battery life. The changes to the components in the processor's power circuit are caused by a phenomenon referred to as the Piezoelectric Effect. When a specific voltage is applied to these components, they begin to resonate producing sounds that fall within the range of human hearing (15 – 20 KHz).
The noise is normal and within the acoustic specifications of the computer.
The original custom Ubuntu 18.04 was immediately replaced with the modern Fedora 35 Workstation with the GNOME desktop. I was pleasantly surprised that Linux was able to automatically find and install BIOS updates (previously you had to start Windows to do this). I also tried CentOS Stream 9, but at the moment EPEL9 has too few applications (compared to CentOS Stream 8 with EPEL8) for a full-fledged desktop.
Interesting further observations:
- Disabling of Intel SGE in the BIOS improves performance for 4%
- This laptop reaches 100C faster than E6530 with i7-3630QM (just after first run of `7z b` benchmark on 8 threads) and reduces performance for 15% till reaching normal temperature (35-45C). So on heavy loads it's just 25% faster than E6530. Although on usual short or single thread loads it's 45% faster.
- According to cpubenchmark site, 10400H should be 75% faster than 3630QM, but it's just 45% faster due to cTDP-down from 45W to 35W to prevent overheating.
